Electronic Cat Litter Boxes
First of all, you should know that electronic cat litter boxes really work. I've been using the LitterMaid Electronic Litter Box for several years, and the only thing you need to remember is that every few days you have to remove the litter container and refill the litter. Our cats didn't mind the electronic cat litter box - in fact, I suspect at night they played with it!
Electronic cat litter boxes work by have a small ledge that cat must step on when leaving the little box. Once they step on the ledge, the automatic mechanism activated, and about 30 seconds later the box springs into action, scoops the litter and dumps it into a covered and partially sealed container. I was surprised that it worked as well as it did, to be honest, and I suspect that newer models work even better.
One tip to help reduce the cost of electronic cat litter boxes is to cover the plastic reservoir with plastic bags from the grocery store - when the reservoir is full, just remove the bag, throw the bagged litter away, and replace a bag around the reservoir. That way you aren't constantly having to buy new plastic containers for your automatic litterbox.
There are many choices for electronic litter boxes - we've listed some of them below. Remember that you need to use a "premium" cat litter. It must clump really well, or the automatic litter box won't work. Premium cat litter is much better for your cat anyway, so it's worth it!

CatGenie 120 Self-Cleaning Litter Box
The CatGenie 120 is amazing. It's self cleaning, and self washing. When the cats use the CatGenie, the litter and urine is cleaning and flushed into the toilet automatically, and then the CatGenie washes and dries the litter for reuse. The litter is biodegradable, and the cleaning solution is cat safe and environmentally safe. The tag line says "With the CatGenie, you'll never touch litter again", and I'm inclined to believe them!  Self-Cleaning Litter Box from ScoopFree
the ScoopFree Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Box has a different way of doing things - the litter comes pre-packed in litter trays, and you replace the trays every few weeks. So while it's self-cleaning in that the litter is scooped out of the tray after use, you still have to replace the trays. The reviews are pretty good, but it's no CatGenie!
